Nature Appreciation Walks
Through walking in a wilderness we strive to create:
- understanding of ecological principles : the dynamics of ecosystems.
- appreciation of plants: adaptations, ecological roles and uses: medicinal, culinary and everyday uses.
- appreciation of animals, birds, insects, reptiles, arachnids: identification; classification, behavioral patterns, inter-actions with other animals and plants of ecological importance.
- understanding of the basic dynamics in habitats – habitat comparison study.
- knowledge of the geology and geography of the area;
- insight and understanding of humankindís impact on the natural environment and the affects thereof;
- opportunity to learn about bush survival techniques;
- self-awareness : learning strengths and weaknesses; and
- opportunity to sharpen life skills: observation, thinking, interpretation, value clarification, communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Insect Hunt (2 hours)
This fun-filled activity reveals the insects world of wonders:
- illustrates ecological principals: food chains, dynamics of food webs, ecological pyramids; ecological importance of inter-action.
- creates an understanding of the adaptations of living organisms: feeding, locomotion, breeding, predator avoidance.
- facilitates the development of problem identification and problem-solving skills.
- sharpens life skills: catching organisms, measuring, recording, observations, interpretation, conclusions.
